Shutting down online comments
Office of Interdisciplinary Studies Program Head and Assistant Prof. Jaigris Hodson was interviewed by CFAX 1070 Dec. 18 about the trend of websites removing comment sections.
Here is an excerpt:
“One of the biggest organizations [to close their comment section] in 2013 was Popular Science,” says Hodson. “They cited a University of Wisconsin study that suggested the comments actually cause people to view the stories differently. They decided they didn’t want people to feel that way about science; influenced by comments online that can be at best misleading and at worst bullying.”
