Wasan Jema, this year’s Governor General Gold Medal winner, was interviewed by CTV News Calgary’s Rahim Ladhani for the station’s Nov. 6 evening broadcast.

Here is an excerpt from the story:

"Wasan Jema was born in Bagdad, and when she was 19 years old, the Iraqi Marshlands - which were at that time one of the largest ecosystems in western Eurasia - were drained by President Saddam Hussein. They were 90 per cent drained because Hussein believed people who lived in the area were plotting against him. [...]

Jema has been doing her Masters of Science at Royal Roads University in Victoria, and last year, she took her 10-year old son Mohammed and went back to Iraq as part of her theses. The goal was to build an assessment framework to restore the marshland ecosystem.

Jema and her son were in a war zone where they couldn’t even leave their house at times. But as tough as a situation as it was, she says not going wasn’t an option."
