Director of Instruction – Learning Services

Our large, urban and multicultural school district provides programs to 56,000 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and over 2,500 adults in adult education programs. Serving our diverse district, our programs and services are designed to address both complex challenges and extraordinary opportunities.
As the Director of Instruction – Learning Services, you will have overall district responsibility for special education, including a wide variety of gifted and behaviour programs. In addition, you will have overall responsibility for English language learners and programs. Your expert knowledge of innovative educational practices and your passion and vision for how students may achieve their own unique potential will serve you well in this complex role.
Along with leading and motivating your large, committed staff in the Learning Services department, you will act as a member of the District Management team and will be involved in the annual budgeting process, infusing your knowledge of the area of special education and English language learning into the many priority-setting conversations at that table. In addition to providing educational leadership, you will plan and manage your departmental budgets, identify opportunities for growth and change, and champion a workplace climate that is positive, respectful and focused on student learning.
Strong interpersonal, problem solving and communication skills are key to success as you will build, maintain and establish new relationships with parents and community partners who share your vision of an inclusive and invigorating learning culture for students. You will also liaise with the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Children and Family Development, provincial resource programs and other organizations that have an interest in the success of students in our district.
Your background is impressive. It includes extensive experience and graduate work in the field of special education and background or course work focused on English language learners. Your broad experience at a senior administrative level is complemented by a Master’s degree in education and certification from the Teacher Regulation Branch of British Columbia. Finally, you are able to clearly articulate a comprehensive understanding of inclusion as it relates to the work of our school district as a public education system.
