To meet modern challenges in the educational field, Royal Roads University has created a new school focused on expanding the skills of educators and added a research chair specializing in learning technologies. Next month the university will establish the new School of Education and Technology (SET) as part of its Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences.
“We’re not offering programs to generate new teachers,” said Matthew Heinz, Dean of the Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences. “We focus on expanding the expertise of existing teachers and administrators. In fact, we serve education in the broadest sense, since a significant number of our students come from organizations outside the traditional educational field.” The creation of the new school is an opportunity to build on the synergy of existing graduate credentials and master’s degrees in instructional design, learning and technology, and educational leadership and management. The new School of Education and Technology offers the following programs:
- MA Educational Leadership and Management (MAELM) - (Domestic)
- MA Educational Leadership and Management (International)
- MA Learning and Technology (MALAT)
- Graduate Diploma in Learning and Technology
- Graduate Certificate in Instructional Design
“The foundation of this school anchors our academic programs in our successful contributions to education and technology over the years,” said Heinz. “It’s an exciting move forward, and one that speaks directly to local, national, and global labour market needs.”New Director Jo Axe will be the school’s first director. Axe holds a PhD from the University of Bradford in the U.K. and an MA in Distributed Learning from Royal Roads. Most recently she served as associate dean in the Royal Roads Faculty of Management.
“Building on the university’s expertise in online learning, the school will bring together keen minds to explore new technologies and seek solutions for our educational institutions and organizations,” said Axe.
Canada Research ChairA major research focus of the new school will be on how learners use technology. George Veletsianos was appointed March 15 by the federal government as Royal Roads University’s first Canada Research Chair in Innovative Learning and Technology. Veletsianos does research in the specialized area of emerging technologies and teaching methods for online learning. He has taught courses on designing online and hybrid learning environments and the use of technology from primary school to university.
The School of Education and Technology at Royal Roads will launch April 1st, 2013.
