The Mayan calendar runs out on December 21st, bringing with it a prediction the world will end. And that end of the culture’s 5,125 year-old cycle has people flocking to the Yucatan Peninsula where famous ruins reside.
The Mexican government estimates more than 50 million people from the country and abroad will visit the southern province in 2012, while more than 200,000 are expected to crowd Chechen Itza on Friday.
However academics say the prophecy has been blown out of proportion. Dr. Gilbert Wilkes of Royal Roads University says the apocalyptic fears have been fed by popular culture. From videos posted on Youtube, to feature films depicting catastrophic occurrences, he feels the image of the Mayan calendar and the threat of the world ending are mere scare tactics...
