National Aboriginal Day has been celebrated in Canada since 1996. This day celebrates the contributions and cultures of the First Nations, Inuit and Metis people of Canada. Royal Roads would like to celebrate this special occasion by inviting students, faculty and staff to two events, one which will be on campus and a second event taking place at Uptown Centre.
Resistance to Residential Schools: Digital Stories
Location: Quarter Deck
Time: 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm
Light snacks and refreshments provided
As part of a "Resistance Narratives" project funded by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, the Centre for Youth & Society hired seven Indigenous youth research assistants to create digital stories documenting resistance to the residential school system.
The project, "Residential School Resistance Narratives: Significance and Strategies for Indigenous Youth" aimed to increase awareness of resistance acts and strategies, and their relevance in today's context and promote intergenerational healing.
Project coordinator, Asma-na-hi Antoine believes that "this research project has ignited a fire that shows in each digital story. The passion of resistance that validates survival and resilience of First Nations people and communities provides hope for healing and reconciliation over the next generations."
These videos were presented to family, friends, and guests at UVic and then to a greater public audience as part of the TRC regional conference in April 2012.
For more information, please contact Asma-na-hi Antoine, Manager of Indigenous Education and Student Services in the Aboriginal Learning & Cultural Centre or via email or telephone.
