MAPC student Deborah Davis explores health literacy through art

Decades of evidence have shown how critical it is for healthcare professionals to use plain language with their patients if those patients are to make informed decisions about their health — but most doctors still use medical jargon with their patients.

In her thesis, Deborah Davis wanted to tackle this challenge from a new perspective. Using sculpture, textiles, photographs and drawings, she explored, through art, why the communication barrier exists between doctors and patients, and what its implications are.
