Effective this week, Disability Services at RRU is now Accessibility Services. This name change better reflects the services that are offered through this office, which include the co-ordination of academic accommodations and support for students with both short-term and permanent disabilities, and the co-ordination of any academic extensions or leaves of absence that are requested for medical reasons.
The decision to make this name change was made after consultation with students, faculty and staff. In recent years we have received feedback from students who hesitated in seeking support from Disability Services because they did not see themselves as disabled. This new name speaks to a broader audience, and more accurately encapsulates the services provided. The name change is also consistent with trends in post-secondary institutions across BC and across Canada.
The Office of Disability Services was formalized in 2007. Since that time, 902 students have received some level of support through their services. This has been accomplished through coordination with academic program offices, members in P&ER, Housing, Library staff, Bookstore staff, various members and departments in IT, University Reception, Counselling, and various members of our staff, faculty and associate faculty. Thanks to everyone who helps support our students’ success!
The frontline of our services are supported by Darlene Joseph, Student Services Office Assistant. Michelle Underdown, recently joined us as the new full-time Accessability Coordinator. They are both located in Grant 130, drop by and say hi.
