In 2016, Nanaimo became national headline news as a whole block of the downtown core succumbed to a large fire. This presentation will discuss the incident, the impact to the businesses, many of whom had no insurance and no business continuity plans, the expectations of the businesses and thecommunity, as well as the challenges with an incident of this magnitude.

 After a prolonged poweroutage lastM arch,Tara realized the importance of developing relationships with key businesses in her community in advance. She will outline the work Port Coquitlam has done to address continuity and recovery through development letter of understanding with key suppliers.

 

 

 

Collaboration Simulation Research Tool: A Board Game

 Every year this seminar showcases the research work by one of the graduates of RoyalRoads University Master’s Program in DisasterManagement.  Mr. Hogya will be presenting his project along with engaging the attendees in some type of board game concept.

 

 Change in ideas and attitudes is needed in disaster management,as disasters are not only becoming moref requent,but also more costly.It can be challenging to get people from different academic backgrounds,experiences levels and entrenched beliefs to come to a common understanding. Using innovative approachs such as serious games can be used to bridge that gap and bring people to shared understanding, and space where they can explore complex ideas through competition and cooperation.
