Revised for Ethical Review Form
Hi everyone:
The Research Ethics Board has updated the Request for Ethical Review form. For those of you who are currently working with students on completing their Ethics Review, please continue using the previous form. And for those of you working with students who have not as yet started to prepare their Ethics Review, please transition to using the newly revised form.
For ease of use, I have attached the revised Ethics Review form. I have also included the Ethics for Students link that contains more details about ethics. http://research.royalroads.ca/ethics-students
All the best,
Marie
Nominating students
Hi everyone:
If you would like to nominate a student for the RRU Founder's Award, please note that you can do so when submitting the student's Final Report and Reflective Paper. When you open SPATTS, under Dropbox Documents you will see: Award Nominees. This is where you can enter the student's name and a brief note that supports your recommendation.
Royal Roads University Founders' Award
A plaque presented to one student in each graduating cohort of a degree program that was primarily delivered in Canada, in recognition of having exemplified the qualities of leadership, sustainability and personal development.
Thanks,
Marie

Committee Chair For ALL Final Reports
Hi everyone:
An update from my last post (Jan. 12th): Effective immediately, Brigitte Harris is the Committee Chair for all Final Reports. Standardizing the Committee Chair will alleviate any confusion of Committee Chair naming on Final Reports. This also reverts back to the original process at the School of Leadership of the Director being the Committee Chair.
For those of you in the process of reviewing/submitting Final Reports, please inform your students to update their cover page.
Thanks again and if you have any questions, please don't hestitate to contact me.
Kind regards,
Marie Graf
Ethics Reviews
A message from the School: You may have noticed some recent changes in our School's ethics review process, particularly in terms of the depth and content of feedback on students' proposals. These changes reflect a larger culture shift happening at Royal Roads, with greater emphasis being placed on the ethics review process more generally across the University in order to create "a culture of research ethics". In addition, as of September 2012, six core members of the School of Leadership Studies now sit on the Research Ethics Board (REB). These six faculty members have been noticing a pattern of issues that need to be addressed earlier on in the students' learning journey (e.g., during Second Residency or in the consent form templates themselves). With this message we want to assure you that the School is taking steps to clarify research ethics processes further up stream before the ethics forms are submitted -- and we also recognize that these changes will take time. Please stay tuned for further updates posted here as they become available. In the meantime, we want to assure you that all feedback on behalf of the REB is given in the spirit of supporting students' learning. We thank you for your ongoing commitment and hard work with our students. We know we're all in this together and we're working toward making this process clearer for everyone involved.
--If I can offer you any assistance or support, please feel free to get in touch with me.
Best regards,
Marie Graf
Accessing the Capstone Site
Hi everyone:
I wanted to remind everyone to be sure to access the Capstone site to obtain the most up to date information, guides, and sample documents for your students (each cohort). If you have any problems accessing the site, please let the Program Associates know (leadership.capstone@royalroads.ca).
All the best,
Marie
Important Updates ~
Hi everyone:Sharing a few key updates with you:
1) Document Elements Style Guide: has be updated and renamed, "Capstone Handbook". (Please make sure you are always using the most up-to-date version of the Handbook when supervising students.)
2) Literature Review Topics: the Core Faculty have determined that requiring students to have organizational change as one of their key topics was too limiting. Therefore, it is no longer a requirement. You may want to encourage students to locate a topic on change that is very specifically located in the context of their study (e.g., not just 'sustaining change' but 'sustaining change of a new policy in a nursing context', etc.).
All the best,Marie
Academic supervision availability
Hi everyone:Oftentimes students that are seeking potential supervisors tell us that they have contacted supervisors on the list only to be told they are not available. If for some reason you are unable to accept new students (you are not available), will be away, or would like to be removed from the list, it would be appreciated if you would contact Lisa (lisa.corak@royalroads.ca) and let her know: when you would like to be removed from the list and also when you would like to be reinstated.
Thanks for your support and assistance!Marie

Quoting personal communications & ethics permission
Hi everyone:There have been discussions regarding students including personal communications in the capstone documents (e.g., proposals and final reports); specifically- how they should be included in the document and also how permission to use the statement is obtained/recorded. The School will be following a widespread practice that is seen as acceptable, as follows:
The student inserts the correct APA bracketed personal communication reference after the statement. They need to share this statement with the person providing it and gain permission for its inclusion (permission could be in the form of a letter or email).
At the bottom of the capstone page (proposal/final report) a footnote should be inserted that records the personal communication is provided with permission.
Please share this information with students you are supervising. If you have any quesitons, please don't hesitate to contact me.
All the best,
Marie
ACTION REQUIRED - Availability to Supervise 2012 Health students
Hello All,
Please reply to Leadership.capstone@royalroads.ca with the requested information by October 1, 2013
In previous cohorts the students have faced the frustration of supervisors being on the list but not available to take new students at that time.
We will now request the above information 2 weeks prior to the start of each cohorts 2nd Residency Term.
NOTE: If we do not receive a reply from you with your availability you will not be included on the supervisors list for this cohort
