With over 20 years of experience at board level and working in the field in various capacities including as Community Relations and Advisor in the areas of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG), Chafika has prepared annual and sustainability reports, designed and implemented governance standards, policies and guidelines for companies operating in Europe and in the Americas, such as:
- human rights and business ethics,
- codes of conduct,
- stakeholder engagement,
- local procurement and employment, and,
- community response mechanisms
Her past responsibilities included being in charge of budgeting, funds distribution and the approval for community programs. Chafika also oversaw the completion of community projects, assisted with auditing and is a promoter for participatory governance.
Chafika has held positions as Vice-President Corporate Affairs and Director of Corporate Social Responsibility within the natural resources sector, and was a Director of the Board for the Peruvian Canadian Chamber of Commerce from 2012 to 2017, while living in Toronto, ON. Recently, she was appointed Research Assistant in the ELHRA funded project ‘Challenging and Reimagining Humanitarian Innovation’, investigating power imbalances and creative solutions in low-resource and Indigenous communities. Her Honors and Awards comprises of four scholarships (including the BC Graduate in 2021), in addition to being named: one of the most influential by the Inspirational Latin Awards, in 2018 for her social contribution and her founder role in the Global Change for Children Foundation (www.gc4c.org); one of the Latin Women Flourishing in Canada for women and leadership in 2020; a panellist at the Ryerson University to celebrate People of Colour’s success in 2020, and a Women who Dare for a summit in 2022.
Chafika is a Doctor of Business Administration student working on a dissertation about board strategy to attend ESG demands and external risks deriving from mining. She has a master’s degree from the University of Victoria where she investigated the essential elements for sustainability in community development. She also holds a law degree and financial minor from Brazil and is a certified project management professional (PMP). Chafika has a strong multicultural exposure, having lived in Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Panama, the United Kingdom and Germany, before finding a forever home in Canada. She is just about to move from Vancouver to Sooke, BC. She has visited over 60 countries and worked in many including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, India, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Sweden, UK, USA, and Venezuela. Chafika is half-Lebanese and half-many of all colours, with Muslim, Catholic and Jewish roots. Her mixed background inspires her to work towards a world more inclusive of diversity.
