School of Communication & Culture Prof. Phillip Vannini and MAIIC alumnus Jonathan Taggart were taken aback last sunday when they heard that the Vancouver premiere of their documentary, Life off Grid, had sold out before the box office even opened. All 420 tickets were gone two days before the show at the iconic East Broadway theatre, and therefore a second show (Monday, Nov. 23) and then a third show (Sunday, Nov. 29 at 6:30 p.m.) had to be added by the theatre management.

"It was somewhat surreal," Vannini and Taggart admitted in unison, to see that so many Vancouver websites, such as Scout Magazine, were promoting the premiere of their film as one of the top things to do in the city during the weekend. "And to sit there in a very large theatre with popcorn in your hands and see so many people," Vannini added, "and to think that this after all was an academic project is a just great feeling."

For those unable to make it to Vancouver on Sunday the film is available on Vimeo and SHAW on Demand. The film's trailer has been viewed to date over 60,000 times and the film has been purchased by viewers in 27 countries and six continents. And "that speaks volume about the power of public ethnography," Vannini says.
